Subject Overview

Mr Trickett and Mr Lavender have worked at the school since 2005 and all teach across the three key stages. Mrs Imrie joined the team in 2013 and Miss Leyland began teaching History at Hagley in 2019.

The department is committed to delivering the History curriculum in an exciting, engaging manner that will make students confident, willing to learn and well prepared to understand and analyse historical events and controversies The skills experienced by learners as part of our curriculum allow pupils to grow as independent, inquisitive learners equipped with the tools to succeed. These skills are outlined in the year group sections below.

Year 7

Autumn Term

The development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain 1066-1509. Including: The Norman Conquest, The Importance of Religion and The Crusades.

Key skills assessed: Chronology, Interpretation, Cause, Consequence, Communicating about the past.

Spring Term

Society, economy and culture during the Middle Ages. Including: The Black Death, Life in a Town and a Village, Crime and Punishment and The Peasants Revolt.

Key skills assessed: Change and continuity, Chronology, Significance.

Summer Term

The Impact of The Roman Empire on Britain.

Key skills assessed: Significance, Communicating about the past.

At the end of the year, a grade will be awarded based on the assessment tasks that have been completed. During the year, pupils will be assessed in 8 key historical skills throughout the year, at least one every six lessons. All tasks are linked to the skills needed in the subject at key stage 4 and 5. A GCSE grade is given to each piece of work as well as detailed, written feedback.

Year 8

Autumn  Term

The Tudor and Stuart monarchs, problems with religion; monasteries, reformation dissolution and plot. The Spanish Armada.

Key skills to be assessed: Using evidence, Cause and Consequence, Change and Continuity, Communicating about the past, Significance, Chronology.

Spring Term

Tudor and Stuart Life; Crime, Punishment, Entertainment. The Gunpowder Plot. 

Key Skills to be assessed: Communicating about the past, Using evidence.

Summer Term 

Civil War, Cromwell, The Great Plague of London, The Great Fire of London, Native American Indians.

Key Skills to be assessed: Interpretation, Chronology, Cause and Consequence, Change and continuity.

Year 9

Autumn  Term

The First World War; causes events and consequences. Treaty of Versailles, The Slave Trade and Britain.

Key skills to be assessed: Cause and Consequence, Communicating about the past, Using Evidence, Significance, Interpretation.

Spring Term

Titanic, Jack the Ripper, Hitler’s Rise to power.  

Key Skills to be assessed: Communicating about the past, Using evidence, Cause and Consequence.

Summer Term 

Jewish persecution and the Holocaust, World War Two; causes events and consequences, The industrial revolution; Kidderminster case study 1750-1850.

Key Skills to be assessed: Significance, Chronology, Cause and Consequence, Change and continuity.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 you will study:

  • Medicine and Treatment Throughout Time c1250 to present
  • The British Sector during World War One.
  • Hitler and Nazi Germany

In Year 11 you will study:

  • Early Elizabethan England 1558-88
  • British America 1713-83: Empire and Revolution

The topics above are covered in three exams

  • In your study of Medicine and Treatment Throughout Time you will begin by studying practices and beliefs within the Greek and Roman Empires before examining the medieval period all the way through to the modern world. This will involve assessing key events and individuals such as the Black Death, Edward Jenner and Florence Nightingale.
  • You will also study WW1 with a focus on The British sector of the Western Front. In this section of the course you will learn about common injuries during the war, the impact of the new weapons that had been developed, treatments that were used and what it was like to live in the trenches.
  • You will also study life in early Elizabethan England. This will involve learning about the problems that Elizabeth faced during her reign including the Spanish Armada invasion. You will also develop an understanding of what life was like for ordinary people during this time including what they did to enjoy themselves.
  • You will also examine what Germany was like between the wars. This will include exploring the problems that the country faced after WW1 and how it was left in ruin following the Wall Street Crash in 1929. A large focus of this module will be on how Hitler comes to power and what life was like under his dictatorship.
  • You will also learn about how Britain developed its control of America as a colony which will include a study of the role of slavery. You will also look at why America successfully fought a war against Britain that ended in the Declaration of Independence.

Assessment at GCSE:Pupils will be taking the Edexcel History GCSE which is assessed as three different examinations. This will see the pupils sit three separate papers combining essay writing and source-work skills including interpretation and inference. Pupils will have built up an extensive understanding of these skills during Key Stage 3. GCSE History at Hagley will allow students to expand upon these skills and use them with a greater degree of understanding and depth.

Key Stage 5

A Level you will study key events in British and European History that have influenced the society that we have today and gain an A Level that both universities and employers highly value. It is widely regarded as a facilitating subject. 

What you Study

History pupils will be following an exciting new curriculum which will present the opportunity to study a wide range of significant topics. You will explore modules in:

  • Anglo-Saxon England and the Norman Conquest 1035-1107
  • Russia 1894 - 1941
  • The Origins of the British Empire 1558-1783.

You will also complete an independent piece of research into an historical issue of your choice, which can be on from any time period or topic that you wish to examine. The feedback we have received from pupils who have studied these modules since September 2015 has been overwhelmingly positive.

How you Study

You will make or be provided with detailed notes that cover all aspects of the course. Teachers also make use of films, role play and a variety of other activities that will engage you throughout the course. The department have previously visited the Normandy battlefields and are also currently planning a future excursion to the D-Day landing beaches and The Somme battlefields.

Department Strengths and Resources 

You will be taught by very experienced teachers who have a long record of bringing out the best in their students. They all have specialisms and have built up a considerable body of knowledge and expertise in these areas. We have an extensive department library which sixth formers are welcome to use and a developing Haggle site containing useful links, resources and forums. The subject is regularly one of the most popular subjects at A Level due to the high quality of the teaching and also the wide range of support given.

Assessment

KS3

KS4

Pupils will be assessed using a variety of different past paper questions, assessing exam technique. Each of these will focus on a different topic or skill needed in the GCSE exams. These will build on skills they developed at Key Stage 3.  Pupils will sit Mock exams in both year 10 and 11, and will experience a mock in each of the papers they sit by the end of Key Stage 4.

Extra Curricular

The History department are keen to offer extra- curricular opportunities. In the past these have included running trips for Key Stage 5 to the Normandy beaches and battlefields, as well as trips to the Imperial War Museum North. At Key Stage 4 we offer a yearly trip to London with a focus on the Medicine and War GCSE topic. This trip visits sights such as the Imperial War Museum, the Old Operating Theatre, the Jack the Ripper walk and the Tower of London amongst other attractions. At Key Stage 3 we have taken pupils to both Kenilworth Castle and the Black Country Museum.  As a department we are passionate about the importance of experiencing places of Historical significance.
