Mr Trickett and Mr Lavender have worked at the school since 2005 and all teach across the three key stages. Mrs Imrie joined the team in 2013 and Miss Leyland began teaching History at Hagley in 2019.

The department is committed to delivering the History curriculum in an exciting, engaging manner that will make students confident, willing to learn and well prepared to understand and analyse historical events and controversies The skills experienced by learners as part of our curriculum allow pupils to grow as independent, inquisitive learners equipped with the tools to succeed. These skills are outlined in the year group sections below.

Autumn Term

The development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain 1066-1509. Including: The Norman Conquest, The Importance of Religion and The Crusades.

Key skills assessed: Chronology, Interpretation, Cause, Consequence, Communicating about the past.

Spring Term

Society, economy and culture during the Middle Ages. Including: The Black Death, Life in a Town and a Village, Crime and Punishment and The Peasants Revolt.

Key skills assessed: Change and continuity, Chronology, Significance.

Summer Term

The Impact of The Roman Empire on Britain.

Key skills assessed: Significance, Communicating about the past.

At the end of the year, a grade will be awarded based on the assessment tasks that have been completed. During the year, pupils will be assessed in 8 key historical skills throughout the year, at least one every six lessons. All tasks are linked to the skills needed in the subject at key stage 4 and 5. A GCSE grade is given to each piece of work as well as detailed, written feedback.

Autumn  Term

The Tudor and Stuart monarchs, problems with religion; monasteries, reformation dissolution and plot. The Spanish Armada.

Spring Term

Tudor and Stuart Life; Crime, Punishment, Entertainment. The Gunpowder Plot.

Civil War, Cromwell, The Great Plague of London, The Great Fire of London, Native American Indians.

Key Skills to be assessed: Interpretation, Chronology, Cause and Consequence, Change and continuity.

The First World War; causes events and consequences. Treaty of Versailles, The Slave Trade and Britain.

Titanic, Jack the Ripper, Hitler’s Rise to power.

Assessment at GCSE:Pupils will be taking the Edexcel History GCSE which is assessed as three different examinations. This will see the pupils sit three separate papers combining essay writing and source-work skills including interpretation and inference. Pupils will have built up an extensive understanding of these skills during Key Stage 3. GCSE History at Hagley will allow students to expand upon these skills and use them with a greater degree of understanding and depth.

A Level you will study key events in British and European History that have influenced the society that we have today and gain an A Level that both universities and employers highly value. It is widely regarded as a facilitating subject. 

What you Study

History pupils will be following an exciting new curriculum which will present the opportunity to study a wide range of significant topics. You will explore modules in:

You will also complete an independent piece of research into an historical issue of your choice, which can be on from any time period or topic that you wish to examine. The feedback we have received from pupils who have studied these modules since September 2015 has been overwhelmingly positive.

How you Study

You will make or be provided with detailed notes that cover all aspects of the course. Teachers also make use of films, role play and a variety of other activities that will engage you throughout the course. The department have previously visited the Normandy battlefields and are also currently planning a future excursion to the D-Day landing beaches and The Somme battlefields.

Department Strengths and Resources 

You will be taught by very experienced teachers who have a long record of bringing out the best in their students. They all have specialisms and have built up a considerable body of knowledge and expertise in these areas. We have an extensive department library which sixth formers are welcome to use and a developing Haggle site containing useful links, resources and forums. The subject is regularly one of the most popular subjects at A Level due to the high quality of the teaching and also the wide range of support given.

KS3

KS4

Pupils will be assessed using a variety of different past paper questions, assessing exam technique. Each of these will focus on a different topic or skill needed in the GCSE exams. These will build on skills they developed at Key Stage 3.  Pupils will sit Mock exams in both year 10 and 11, and will experience a mock in each of the papers they sit by the end of Key Stage 4.
