Key Stage 4

The GCSE specification we follow is Schools History Project, Edexcel, Option B.
In Year 10 you will study:
• Medicine and Treatment Throughout Time
• The Transformation of Surgery 1845 - 1918
In Year 11 you will study:
• Hitler and Nazi Germany
• Britain 1815 – 51
The topics on Medicine, Surgery and Britain 1815 – 51 are assessed in three exam papers; you will produce a controlled assessment piece of coursework on Hitler.
In your study of Medicine and Treatment Throughout Time you will begin by studying practices and beliefs within the Greek and Roman Empires before examining the medieval period all the way through to the modern world. This will involve assessing key events and individuals such as the Black Death, Edward Jenner and World War One.
You will also study The Transformation of Surgery 1845 – 1918 where you will learn about the three problems that existed in surgery during the 19th century; pain infection and bleeding. This will involve discovering what was used to deal with pain such as alcohol, opium and laughing gas and how this eventually led to the development of anaesthetics.
In your work on Britain you will examine the world of Oliver Twist – poverty, protest and the building of railways. You will learn how Britain played a vital role in the development of the modern world and the extent to which society changed during this period.
The controlled assessment on Hitler will examine the reasons for his rise to power and how he sought to transform Germany and prepare the country for war.
GCSE History is a well established, hugely valuable qualification, which is widely accepted and highly regarded by employers, colleges and universities. You will develop a range of essential skills including communication, research and analysis which can lead to a variety of different careers in education, journalism, law and business.
You will have the opportunity to visit two museums in London during year 10. The department are also currently planning an A Level trip to Normandy, France.
