Dance

All pupils and students at Hagley Catholic High School follow a taught course of Dance. The Department is made up by one specialist teacher and supported by a technician who are fully committed to the education of the pupils:

Why Choose GCSE Dance?

1. The study of DANCE as an art form contributes to your aesthetic and social development.

2. As a physical activity it promotes fitness and well being.

The Components for assessment are:

Critical appreciation of Dance - 1 hour Written Paper

Candidates answer questions on two professional works, chosen by AQA

20%

Set Dance - Practical Examination                                               

Solo performance of a Set Dance prescribed by AQA

20%

Performance - Controlled Assessment

Performance in a duo/group dance related to a prescribed professional work

40%

Choreography - Controlled Assessment

Solo composition task (15%)

The dance takes its stimulus from a professional work and is developed by the student

Choreography (25%)

The dance may be in any style, in response to an outline stimulus from AQA

 

GCSE Dance is unique in that it offers students a way to explore their own values and beliefs and benefits their overall fitness and well being. They will gain regular performance experience, develop a range of vital skills and view and analyse professional Dance works. Dance is a physically demanding and academically challenging subject that requires dedication, but the experience in its entirety is rewarding and valuable for all future careers.

GCSE Dance can lead to careers within the performing arts, theatre, media, journalism, teaching, youth or community work, choreography, dance therapy, designing or artistic administrator work. Dance can ultimately complement and enhance any profession that requires confidence, creativity and dedication as it develops and builds on these vital skills.

Homework expectations: Pupils will be set homework on a regular basis that will include writing of a comparative and analytical nature and practical coursework which will be carried out in school at break times, Lunch and after school.

WHAT YOU STUDY

Dance is a physically demanding course. Year 12 focuses on the students‘ experience of dance, creating solo choreography and group performances. Year 13 transfers these skills to group choreography and furthers your technical and expressive skills, studying an era of history, creating work based on a researched professional practitioner. The written examination requires students to articulate their studio practice, technique, choreographic and performance experience gained from the course, and to also express their knowledge of a range of professional contemporary dance works.

 

HOW YOU STUDY

The majority of the course is studied practically through technique classes and performance and choreographic workshops. Students are required to rehearse and develop their practical work outside of lesson time. The theory that accompanies the practical requires students to document their experiences and development in detail. Students have opportunities to develop their performance experience through showcasing their work in ‘in house’ performance evenings and a number of platforms within the county.

 

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

Specialist teaching with strong community and county dance links for performance and choreographic platform opportunities. A Theatre space with a dance floor, mirrors, ballet barres, sound system and projection screen. Hagley also has its own gifted and talented dance company ‘Spark’, that are taught technique and performance by outside professional practitioners. A-level students are encouraged to take part in this fantastic opportunity. The department also runs regular trips to the Theatre, as well as residential trips to London to experience dance in our vibrant capital.

 

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY

Dance courses at University include Dance Performance, Dance Science and Education, Performing Arts Degrees, Community Dance in Higher Education, Dance studies and Dance and Exercise Science. Dance can be combined with subjects such as English and Music for a joint honours degree. For pupils pursuing a professional career in Dance, they can obtain their degree pending an audition at Dance Schools such as LABAN and Northern Contemporary.

 

COMBINES WELL WITH

You may like to combine Dance with Performing and Creative Arts subjects, Humanities and Physical Education; however, Dance complements and enriches any combination of subjects.

 

GCSE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

 

A GCSE in grade C or above in Dance and English is preferred. It is also recognised that students gain appropriate experience in dance outside the context of the school curriculum and applicants may be required to demonstrate their technical ability.

In addition to this, Dance has developed my creativity and ability to work with others.
