On Wednesday 4th December Isobel Salter Year 9 and Edward Oakes Year 11 took part in the Stourbridge round of the Rotary Young Chef competition held at Pedmore Technology College, Stourbridge. They were selected from a number of entries to prepare, cook and serve a healthy main course meal and dessert for two people as economically as possible. Pupils were given a maximum of £10 to spend on ingredients. Edward and Isobel competed against pupils from  Pedmore Technology College, Oldswinford Hospital School and Redhill School.

Isobel made:  Stuffed chicken with lemon in a tomato sauce served with French beans and new potatoes and a dessert of strawberry shortbreads

Edward made: Fillet of salmon served with roasted new potatoes, asparagus, roasted vine tomatoes with a sweet chilli sauce. For dessert Edward made conference pears, poached in spiced apple sauce and served with quenelles of vanilla cream.

All entries were judged on healthy choice, planning, costing, skills, hygiene, time use, food temperature and presentation of the table and final dishes.

Both pupils did exceptionally well and we were delighted to hear that Edward was announced the winner of the Stourbridge heat.  He will now go onto the regional heat of this competition. Edward won £5o and was given chefs whites. He is currently taking a GCSE in Food Technology and has also been attending the Young Chefs Academy at The University College of Birmingham on a Saturday morning. Edward is very keen to follow a career in the food industry and has recently secured a place for next year to do a Level 1 Chefs Diploma at the University College of Birmingham.
