Product Design is an exciting new way to look at the modern world.  It is full of products that have been designed to meet the needs and wants of different groups of people.  In order for you to become a good designer you will learn how products have developed through analysing existing products, creating new designs, 3D physical modelling and 2D/3DCAD modelling before finally making a 3D prototype.  You will gain practical skills by transforming and manipulating a wide range of materials including smart materials.  In addition, you will become competent in CAD/CAM applications, which will enhance your design and making skills and outcomes.

Your personal development skills will also be enhanced by being encouraged to use independent inquiry skills linked to team working through problem solving and reflective learning opportunities.  These will develop a greater self-confidence which you need in life.

During Year 10 Product Design offers DMA projects which will involve working and manipulating a wide range of materials, giving you the necessary practical skills and CAD/CAM knowledge in preparation for your GCSE.

The emphasis of the controlled assessment is focused on designing, modelling and making and this is reflected in the mark scheme.  See charts below.

Your project can be chosen from up to 16 controlled assessment tasks from AQA.
